Caitlin Peluffo is not coasting.

But what stayed with me from our conversation had nothing to do with the résumé.

She said she never wants anyone leaving an interaction with her feeling worse than when they started. Not just the audience. Anyone. The front desk person at the hotel. The stranger in the elevator. The room full of people who aren't paying attention because they're trying to get each other's numbers.

That's not a performance philosophy. That's a life philosophy.

What she described is a kind of emotional generosity that most people reserve for special occasions — job interviews, first dates, important meetings. Caitlin applies it everywhere, all the time, as a baseline standard for how she moves through the world.

The tool she uses is reading the room. Not just for comedy — for every interaction. She knows when to be funny and when to be quiet. When to be the center of attention and when to simply exist in the space and let everything already be great. That's a rare skill. Most people are so focused on what they want to bring to a room that they never stop to ask what the room actually needs.

Her therapist, apparently, does not appreciate the jokes. But the rest of us do.

The question worth asking yourself isn't whether you're funny. It's whether the people around you consistently leave your presence a little better than they arrived.
